This isn't an article about how to build AI.
It's about how many of us are trying to understand it.
There are certain words in life that instantly take you back to high school.
For me? It's cosine and tangent.
If you're anything like me, the moment someone says those words, your brain politely closes the curtains and whispers, “How many more minutes until lunch?”
Let's be honest.
Most of us didn't graduate thinking, “I can't wait to use cosine and tangent for the rest of my life.”
We survived the quizzes, barely survived the exams, graduated, moved on, and promised ourselves we'd never think about them again.
Then... ChatGPT showed up.
Like everyone else, I wanted to learn.
So I opened LinkedIn.
Big mistake.
Every other post had another colorful diagram explaining artificial intelligence. Boxes. Arrows. A hundred logos. Words like LLM, RAG, MCP, embeddings, vector databases, and agentic AI were flying around like everyone had secretly attended the same engineering conference.
Meanwhile...
I was just trying to understand ChatGPT.
Not because I wanted to build AI.
Because I wanted to understand how it could make my work a little better.
By the third diagram, I wasn't learning anymore. I was having flashbacks to math class.
Maybe AI Isn't Complicated.
Maybe we've made explaining it complicated.
Those diagrams are fantastic for the people building AI. But many of us aren't trying to build the engine. We're trying to drive the car.
Most of us weren't trained as engineers.
We're marketers, HR professionals, teachers, finance leaders, project managers, event planners, entrepreneurs, and business professionals. We don't wake up wondering which vector database is the fastest.
We wake up wondering:
Can AI save me two hours today?
Imagine teaching someone to drive by opening the hood first.
Most people don't need to know how the engine works before they can get to work. AI deserves the same treatment.
Start with what it can help people do. Explain the machinery later.
What Does “Using AI” Actually Look Like?
For most professionals, it doesn't look like a robot taking over the office while everyone dramatically packs a cardboard box.
It looks much less cinematic.
It might be asking for a cleaner first draft of an email you have rewritten six times because the phrase “just following up” has suddenly lost all meaning.
It might be turning meeting notes into a task list, comparing three vendor proposals, organizing a messy spreadsheet, outlining a presentation, or helping you find the one sentence your brain knows is in there but refuses to produce before coffee.
For me, AI became useful when I stopped treating it like a subject I had to master and started treating it like a working session.
I gave it context. I explained what I was trying to accomplish. I corrected it when it misunderstood me. I asked it to try again when the answer sounded like it had been written by a very enthusiastic corporate brochure.
That part matters: AI isn't a magic button, and it isn't automatically right.
It can misunderstand the assignment. It can give you an answer with the confidence of a person who definitely did not read the email thread. It still needs judgment, careful verification, taste, and a real human who knows what “good” should look like.
AI can help carry the boxes. You still decide where everything belongs.
The Fear Isn't Always About the Technology.
Sometimes it's about not wanting to feel left behind.
Everyone online seems to have a system, a framework, a favorite tool, and a strongly worded opinion about which job will disappear by Thursday.
That creates pressure to understand everything immediately.
But you don't need to understand every kind of AI before using one helpful feature. You don't need a workflow with ten steps, twelve subscriptions, or a new job title containing the word prompt.
You need one real problem.
Start with the task you keep postponing. The document that needs structure. The research that feels scattered. The blank page staring at you with the emotional warmth of a parking ticket.
Then ask:
Can AI help me think through this without thinking instead of me?
That small distinction changes everything.
Curiosity Is Enough to Begin.
You are allowed to learn this slowly.
You are allowed to ask basic questions. You are allowed to ignore the diagram with seventeen arrows until it becomes relevant to your life. That may be never, and that is perfectly fine.
The people who will benefit most from AI may not be the people who can explain every technical term.
They may simply be the people who understand their own work well enough to recognize where help would matter.
A teacher knows which lesson takes too long to prepare. An event professional knows which planning document always becomes chaos. A small business owner knows which customer questions repeat every week. A manager knows which update should have been three bullets instead of a meeting.
That knowledge is not less valuable than technical knowledge.
It's where useful AI begins.
The older I get, the more I realize something.
I didn't forget cosine and tangent because I wasn't smart enough.
I forgot them because nobody ever helped me understand why they mattered.
Maybe AI deserves better than that.
Maybe we don't need more diagrams.
Maybe we need more conversations.
Because the goal isn't to make AI sound intelligent.
The goal is to help more people feel confident enough to use it.
So let's leave cosine and tangent where they belong...
Back in high school.
And let's make AI something everyone feels welcome to learn.
